Highlanders
This range of beautiful images by renowned wildlife photographer Laurie Campbell celebrates the iconic ancient breed of Highland Cattle so loved by all those who visit Scotland. Although they look fearsome they are in fact fairly placid and gentle creatures. They are well adapted to a harsh climate as they have a shaggy outer coat that protects them in sub zero temperatures and a soft, thick undercoat. They are coloured red, black, cream and khaki brown and although gentle they can be very stubborn and understandably protective of their calves, they are also very intelligent. Highland Cattle are helpful in terms of conservation, their foraging increases diversity of growth in grasslands, they help manage land by clearing space allowing for new growth, they help disperse seeds and eat vegetation unpalatable to other breeds. They can survive in the harsh environment of the Highlands and Islands and thrive in the many other parts of the word they have been exported to.
